A business proposal is a type of technical report that technical writers are acquainted with. When the department of a company desires to purchase a product, a proposal must be written. Consequently, the management group decides the benefits and risks of the option that is proposed. “A proposal, in the technical sense, is a document that tries to persuade the reader to implement a proposed plan or approve a proposed project” (Neveu et al., 2019). Types of proposals include solicited, unsolicited, external, and internal proposals.
Three pivotal characteristics of a business proposal are that it must be precisely and correctly written, that the purpose and message are clearly perceived throughout the document, and one last characteristic is that the tone and length of the paper must be appropriate. Because of these attributes, proposals are a form of technical writing. The key components of a business proposal are to identify the targeted audience, the clear message that states the need for a product, or the solution that must be taken to resolve a conflicting situation. To describe the product or solution needed in detail is another crucial component of this type of report. Moreover, the inclusion of graphical elements and a strong summary that reinforces the purpose and need of what is being requested (Neveu et al., 2019).
When a business proposal is well-written, the outcome is rewarding for the company and furthermore for the creator of the document. The skills developed by technical writers increase their professional progress and career development. The practice of creating business proposals gives writers the tools to advance continuously in their professional and personal lives.
